From big cities brimming with attractions to stunning national parks and quaint rural areas, there’s something for everyone traveling in the US. It’s only natural to want to explore with the entire family, but does this include your pet? If you’re considering taking your furry friend on your next trip, you’re not alone; 78% of Americans travel with their pets every year. However, it does take some more planning upfront, especially when it comes to finding pet-friendly hotels.
To help you out, we’ve put together this guide to finding a hotel that allows pets, including a list of some of the coolest ones in the country.
Can I bring my pet to any hotel in the United States?
The short answer is, no. Not all hotels allow pets, which can make finding cat- and dog-friendly hotels the most stressful part of vacationing with your furry friend. It’s crucial to check hotel policies before booking, but the good news is that you have options. With more people in the US traveling with their pets than in previous decades, the hospitality industry has taken note. More than 75% of US hotels now offer some form of pet accommodations, making it easier than ever to find hotels that allow dogs and cats.
Keep in mind that just because a hotel allows pets, your pet still needs to be on their best behavior. Scroll down below the list of hotels that allow dogs and cats for tips on ensuring your pet is ready (physically and socially) for traveling.
9 awesome hotels that allow pets
The US is full of pet-friendly hotels, but sometimes the hotel can be just as exciting as the destination. These are nine of the most unique hotels that allow cats and dogs we could find.
Wondering how well you can trust this list? Trupanion has no partnerships with any of these hotels and receives no compensation for any mentions or links to them. Our team just thought their pet policies were too cool not to share.

Tips for finding a pet-friendly hotel
It may be tempting to simply click “pet-friendly” on a hotel booking website and hope for the best, but there’s more to finding hotels that allow cats than relying on the booking site. So, before you book, take these few extra steps for a smooth vacation:
- Check the hotel's pet policy on their website — Some hotels that allow dogs have breed or size restrictions.
- Confirm if there are pet fees — Sometimes that hotel deal isn’t as impressive when you have to pay extra for your cat.
- Read the reviews on third-party websites — Using review sites like Yelp or Google is a great way to discover if a hotel advertising pet-friendliness is as welcoming as they seem.
- Call the hotel directly — Some hotels require advance notice for pets. So while the hotel may allow cats and dogs, they may only be permitted in certain rooms and the space may be limited.
Make sure pets are ready for travel
Before you reserve your room, ask yourself if your pet is ready to embark on this adventure with you. Knowing how well your cat behaves in a car or plane is an important first step, but you also need to consider how they interact with strangers and strange animals. Big changes like traveling and staying in new spaces surrounded by strangers can be anxiety-inducing, especially for pets prone to stress.
If you have to travel with your pet, or you’re confident they will enjoy themselves and behave in new environments, make sure you schedule a pre-trip vet visit. Talk to your vet about your plans and get their expert opinion (for example, if your pet needs updated vaccines). They may also be able to provide guidance on how to protect your pet from potential risks during your travels.
If you have a cat, they may not be as accustomed to being out in the world as their canine counterparts. Check out more tips for traveling with a cat to help keep them safe.
